In order to do well on the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature test, you do not need to be familiar with specific works or to memorize anything; however, it is essential that you have a broad knowledge of literature and familiarity with basic literary terminology. Your text, The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature: Reading, Thinking, Writing, seventh edition, by Michael Meyer, will provide you with example readings and will define terms for you.

Examination questions will be based on passages already in the test booklet; therefore, no previous knowledge of the passage is required. The exam will include approximately 80 multiple-choice questions to be answered within 90 minutes.

On the test, you will be required to do the following:
  • Read prose and poetry with understanding;
  • Analyze the elements of a literary passage and respond to nuances of meaning, tone, imagery, and style;
  • Interpret metaphors, recognize rhetorical and stylistic devices, perceive relationships between parts and wholes, and grasp a speaker’s or author’s attitudes;
  • Know the means by which literary effects are achieved; and
  • Have familiarity with the basic terminology used to discuss literary texts.

This course covers the following areas: Poetry
  • Prose (fiction and nonfiction)
  • Drama
  • British Literature
  • American Literature
  • Works in Translation
  • Classical and pre-Renaissance
  • Renaissance and the 17th Century
