Community-Focused Nursing is an upper-level baccalaureate test designed to prepare the registered nurse for transition to baccalaureate-level practice. The examination focuses on the synthesis of population-based health and public health concepts to promote, maintain, and restore health of families, aggregates, and communities. In the course, the concept of client is expanded to include families, aggregates, and communities within the context of a complex and dynamic environment. Analysis and application of selected theories and health promotion/protection and disease prevention strategies are also explored. This course covers the following areas:

• Concepts, models, and theories to promote health, reduce risk, and prevent disease.
• Analysis of relevant epidemiological, demographical, and bio-statistical data to assess health needs and priorities.
• Knowledge of environmental health risks to promote health and prevent disease.
• The effect of current health care systems on the health of the community.
• Knowledge of social, economic, political, legal, and regulatory issues that result in actual or potential disparities in access to quality care.
• Knowledge of ethical issues and decision making when caring for families, aggregates, and communities.
• Collaborative strategies and partnerships to promote the health of the community.
• Professional roles for community health nurses including advocate, information manager, and educator.
• Identification of evidence to support decision-making and needed change in practice.
• Principles of cultural competence to provide for the health needs of the community.
