Research in Nursing


Research in Nursing measures knowledge and understanding of material typically taught in a one-semester, three-credit, upper-level course in a baccalaureate program.

Alert: It is essential that you have knowledge of statistics in order to be successful in this course.

The exam has two parts consisting of approximately 80 four-option multiple-choice questions in the first part and four free-response questions that measure your ability to critique a research study in the second part. You will be given three hours to complete this exam.

Material in the exam will cover quantitative research and qualitative research, which means you must have knowledge of statistics. Therefore, in order for you to be successful in this course, you should have already passed the statistics exam offered in this program or a comparable statistics course taken at an accredited institution elsewhere.

You will also be expected to demonstrate the ability to
  • comprehend ethical issues related to research,
  • apply knowledge of concepts fundamental to quantitative and qualitative research,
  • comprehend the roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse in relation to participation in research and implementation of research findings, and
  • evaluate research studies for applicability to nursing practice.

  • Critique of a Research Study
